D-Link has two generations of setup. Recent routers and mesh systems are set up with the EAGLE PRO AI app or a browser page at a devicesetup.net address, using the details printed on the Quick Installation Guide. Older DIR-series routers start a setup wizard at dlinkrouter.local or 192.168.0.1. This guide covers both, based on D-Link’s own installation guides and support pages. If you only need the login address and default password for your model, our D-Link router login page lists them.

Which Setup Method Does Your D-Link Use?

Look at the Quick Installation Guide in the box and the label on the router.

If it shows a Setup Code (a QR-style code) and the EAGLE PRO AI logo, you have a newer model — for example the R15 AX1500 router or the M32 mesh router. Use the app or the devicesetup.net page.

If the label lists http://dlinkrouter.local or 192.168.0.1 and an admin login, you have an older DIR-series model. Use the browser setup wizard.

In both cases the Wi-Fi name and password you connect with first are on the label or on the guide.

Step 1: Connect the Router

D-Link’s setup instructions use this order:

  1. Turn off your cable or DSL modem.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the router’s Internet port.
  3. Turn the modem back on and wait about two minutes until it has started.
  4. Plug in the router. On the R15, wait until the power light turns solid white; on the M32, until the status light flashes orange; on older DIR models, until the power light turns green.

If your provider’s box is a gateway that also routes and makes Wi-Fi, you will have two routers in a row. That works, but bridge mode on the gateway avoids double NAT; see modem vs router vs gateway.

Newer Models: EAGLE PRO AI App

  1. Install EAGLE PRO AI from the App Store or Google Play and open it.
  2. Tap Install New Device.
  3. Scan the Setup Code on the Quick Installation Guide or on the router’s label.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps: the app detects the internet connection, asks for a PPPoE username and password if your provider uses them, and lets you set the Wi-Fi name, the Wi-Fi password and the device (admin) password.
  5. Reconnect your phone and other devices to the new Wi-Fi network.

The Quick Installation Guide includes a backup copy of the Setup Code. Keep it; you need it if you ever reset the router and set it up again.

Newer Models: Browser Setup at devicesetup.net

If you prefer a computer:

  1. Connect the computer to the router’s Wi-Fi using the name and password from the Quick Installation Guide, or with an Ethernet cable.
  2. In a browser, open http://WXYZ.devicesetup.net/, where WXYZ stands for the last four characters of the router’s MAC address, printed on the label.
  3. Follow the on-screen wizard. If it asks for the device password, it is printed on the label and the Quick Installation Guide.

The address only works while you are connected to the router. If it does not open, check that you typed the four MAC characters correctly.

Older DIR Models: Setup Wizard

For DIR-series routers, D-Link’s instructions are:

  1. Connect a computer to one of the router’s LAN ports with an Ethernet cable, or to its default Wi-Fi.
  2. Open a browser and enter http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar — not a search box.
  3. On first login the Setup Wizard starts automatically. If a login page appears instead, the default username on many DIR models is admin with an empty password; check the label for your model.
  4. The wizard detects the internet connection type. Cable connections usually use DHCP (Dynamic IP) and need nothing more. DSL and some fiber connections use PPPoE: enter the username and password from your provider.
  5. Create a Wi-Fi name and a password of at least 8 characters for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. A longer passphrase is much stronger; our Wi-Fi password generator makes one.
  6. Create a password for the router’s settings page. D-Link asks for one that differs from the Wi-Fi password.
  7. Save and let the router restart, then reconnect your devices to the new network.

D-Link recommends doing the first setup over a cable, so the connection does not drop when the Wi-Fi settings change.

After Setup: What to Check

The wizard gets you online but leaves some settings to you. These are worth a few minutes:

Firmware. Check for an update in the EAGLE PRO AI app or in the firmware section of the web settings (the menu name differs between models), and switch on automatic updates if offered. See how to update router firmware.

Wireless security. Choose WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 if available; see WPA2 vs WPA3.

Guest network. D-Link calls it Guest Zone; use it for visitors and smart devices. See how to set up a guest Wi-Fi network.

WPS and remote management. Switch them off if you do not use them; see how to secure your home network.

Save the passwords. Write down the Wi-Fi password and the device password in a password manager. If you forget the device password later, D-Link’s guides say the only way back is a reset; see forgot your router password.

If the Setup Page Does Not Open

Check that you are connected to the D-Link router, not to the provider’s Wi-Fi or mobile data. Setup addresses only work on the router’s own network.

Use the IP address instead of the name. If dlinkrouter.local does not open, try 192.168.0.1. If that fails too, read the router’s real address on your computer — see what is my router IP — or open our page on dlinkrouter.local.

If the internet does not work after setup, restart the modem and then the router. If it still fails, check the connection type and the PPPoE login with your provider; the router lights guide helps read the internet light.

If the router asks for a password you never set, someone configured it before you. Reset it: with the router on, hold the reset button with a paper clip — on the R15 until the light turns solid red — and start the setup again. See how to factory reset a router.

Frequently asked questions

What is the D-Link router setup address?

Older DIR models use http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1. Newer EAGLE PRO AI models use http://WXYZ.devicesetup.net/, where WXYZ is the last four characters of the MAC address.

What is the default D-Link router password?

Many older DIR models use the username admin with no password. Newer models have a unique device password printed on the label and the Quick Installation Guide.

Can I set up a D-Link router without a computer?

Yes. Newer models are set up with the EAGLE PRO AI app by scanning the Setup Code. Older models can be set up from a phone’s browser connected to the router’s Wi-Fi.

Do I need my provider’s login to set up a D-Link router?

Only if your connection uses PPPoE, which is common with DSL and some fiber providers. Cable connections usually work without it.

Why does dlinkrouter.local not open?

Usually because the device is not connected to the D-Link router or the name is typed into a search box. Use 192.168.0.1 instead, or check the router’s address on your computer.
