NETGEAR routers, including the Nighthawk line, are set up either with the Nighthawk app on a phone — which NETGEAR calls the easiest way — or in a browser at routerlogin.net. Orbi mesh systems use the separate Orbi app. Either route takes about ten minutes. Below are the steps from NETGEAR’s own guides, plus the settings to check afterwards and fixes for the errors people run into most. For default logins of older models, see our NETGEAR router login page.

Before You Start

Three things decide how smooth the setup will be.

Your connection type. Cable and most fiber connections need nothing; DSL and some fiber providers use PPPoE with a username and password from the provider.

Your provider’s box. If it is a gateway that also routes, plan to put it in bridge mode or turn off its Wi-Fi; see modem vs router vs gateway.

Your old Wi-Fi name and password, if you want devices to reconnect automatically to the new router.

Step 1: Connect Everything

According to NETGEAR’s installation guide:

  1. Connect the router’s Internet port to your modem (or the incoming Ethernet line) with an Ethernet cable, and attach any external antennas.
  2. Plug in the router and, if it has a power button, turn it on.
  3. Find the default Wi-Fi name and network key on the QR code label. The same details are on a permanent label on the back or bottom of the router.

If you are replacing an older router on a cable modem, restart the modem too, so it accepts the new device.

Option A: The Nighthawk App

  1. Install the Nighthawk app (or the Orbi app for Orbi systems). Check that your model is supported; NETGEAR keeps a list of compatible products.
  2. Open the app and scan the QR code on the router label, or connect your phone to the router’s default Wi-Fi.
  3. Follow the steps. The app checks the internet connection, lets you set the Wi-Fi name and password, and asks you to create an admin password for the router.
  4. Accept the firmware update if the app offers one at the end.

If the app cannot find the router, turn off mobile data on the phone during setup; NETGEAR lists this among its fixes for setup errors.

Option B: A Browser at routerlogin.net

If you prefer a computer, or your model is not supported by the app, the browser setup works on every NETGEAR router:

  1. Connect a computer to the router with a cable or to its default Wi-Fi.
  2. Open http://routerlogin.net in a browser. If it does not load, try http://www.routerlogin.net or the router’s IP address, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  3. The installation assistant starts on first access. It detects your internet connection; if your provider uses PPPoE, it asks for the username and password.
  4. Create the admin password. The username is admin; the password is the one you set now, and both are case-sensitive. Some models also ask for security questions for password recovery.
  5. Set the Wi-Fi name and password, or keep the ones from the label. Our Wi-Fi password generator makes a strong one.
  6. Let the router check for new firmware.

Later, you reach the same settings at routerlogin.net with the admin username and password.

After Setup

Once the router is online, a few settings are worth checking.

Firmware: if you skipped the update, use ADVANCED → Administration → Firmware Update (or Settings → Administration on newer interfaces) and click Check; see how to update router firmware.

Security: choose WPA2/WPA3 if available — see WPA2 vs WPA3 — and turn off WPS if you do not use it.

Guest network: set one up for visitors; see how to set up a guest Wi-Fi network.

Parental controls and site blocking: see how to block websites on your router for NETGEAR’s Block Sites.

Common Setup Errors

“Router not found” in the app. Make sure the phone is connected to the router’s Wi-Fi from the label, turn off mobile data and VPN, and move closer. Restart the router and try again.

“Internet not connected.” Restart the modem, then the router. Check that the cable goes into the router’s Internet port, not a LAN port. If your provider uses PPPoE, check the login; if the provider’s box is a gateway, use bridge mode or connect to it once to confirm it has internet.

routerlogin.net does not open. It only works while you are connected to the NETGEAR router. Type the address in the address bar, not a search box, or use the router’s IP address; see what is my router IP.

The router asks for a password you never set. Someone set it before. Use the password recovery option if it was enabled, or reset the router: see how to factory reset a router.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NETGEAR router setup address?

routerlogin.net or www.routerlogin.net, or the router’s IP address, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. They work only while you are connected to the router.

What is the default NETGEAR admin password?

The username is admin. Current NETGEAR routers ask you to create the password during setup; older models used password as the default. Our NETGEAR page lists defaults by model.

Do I need the Nighthawk app to set up a NETGEAR router?

No. The app is the easiest way, but every NETGEAR router can also be set up in a browser at routerlogin.net.

How do I set up a NETGEAR router with my provider’s modem?

Connect the modem to the router’s Internet port, restart the modem, and run the setup. If the provider’s box is a gateway, put it in bridge mode to avoid double NAT.

How do I connect to my NETGEAR router after setup?

Open routerlogin.net while connected to its network and log in with the admin username and the password you created, or use the Nighthawk app.
